Krafting with Krampus
Ukrainian Easter Egg (Pysanka) Workshop
Create your own Ukrainian pysanky in this fun and interactive class.
Art and tradition play a very important role in Ukrainian culture, which is why we have chosen to showcase their beautiful, hand decorated Easter eggs as the subject of this workshop.
Craftsmanship like this can’t be taught in one sitting, but the class will give you even more appreciation of how much work and talent goes into making such beautiful art.
Our own Queen of SHHH, Diana Esordi, who spent a month in Ukraine in the early 2000’s will lead this workshop. She will share the history of these eggs as well as some of her personal experiences with the Ukrainian people.
Participants will get a kit for making two eggs. One will be using a special sleeve to get the precise Ukrainian art on your egg. The other will be hand painted by you in any style of your liking. Diana will provide plenty of examples to work from or feel free to do your own image research for a style you’d like to emulate. While the traditional technique uses wax and dyes to create the design, we will be using paint and brushes to make the process a little easier this first time. Painting is a great introduction to the art of pysanka and the perfect way to get a feel for the line work required. If there is enough interest at this workshop a longer class might be offered in April that will utilize traditional wax techniques using kistkas, dyes, and real eggs.
Your instructor will give a brief history on these eggs and how they are created. You will then create a very detailed design by using a sleeve, with traditional Ukrainian art, on one of the eggs. For your second egg, you are invited to have fun and paint your own design. Will it be traditional or a design of your own creation You decide.
Each participant will receive a kit in class to create two eggs using non-breakable, paintable eggs. Plus you will receive an egg stand you can decorate to display your favorite egg. All paint brushes and paints will be provided. Shared items will not be available to take home.
If you’d like feel free to bring any favorite crafting supplies like favorite paint colors or small gems to add to your egg.
Our very own Queen of SHHH and co-founder of the Krewe of Krampus, Diana Esordi, will be your host for Krafting with Krampus. Diana is a painter, illustrator, and photographer, whose work has been shown in Los Angeles. She is dedicated to continually expanding and refining her artistic skills. With a background in global folklore and the arts she is excited to share her knowledge of Ukraine and some its art with you.
