Accessibility Row
Accessibility Row
The Krewe of Krampus is pleased to offer the first and only accessible and inclusive parade in New Orleans.
The Krewe of Krampus has created a parade that promotes a more inclusive experience and greater accessibility. We have Accessibility Row on Independence Street between Royal and Burgundy Streets. In this two block section there are areas for people with limited mobility, there is an area with a host providing audio descriptions of the parade for people that are blind, there is an American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter for people that are deaf or hard of hearing, and a “Quiet Zone” for children with sensory processing needs. The Quiet Zone will offer a quieted version of the parade as it goes by, more space for the attendees, and a social story is also available as a download for parents or caretakers to read with their children to help these younger parade goers know what to expect before the parade.
As our Krewe does offer throws, if you are in located in the Quiet Zone and a throw would cause any difficulty we have also created a “No Throws” graphic for you to print and attach to yourself or anyone with you.
Accessibility Row Essential Info
1. Accessibility Policy Statement
The Krewe of Krampus and One Krewe are committed to providing services, assistance, and support to our members and supporters with disabilities, to the best of our ability and within our budget limitations.
2. Accessibility Row – Location & Physical Access
Accessibility Row is located on Independence Street between Royal and Burgundy Streets in the Bywater neighborhood. You will see signs on the sidewalks, so you will know you are in the right place. To access the east side of the Quiet Zone there is a curb cut on the corner of Independence and Dauphine. To access the Mobility Zone there is a wide driveway apron (1/4” level change) near the east corner of Independence and Dauphine Streets. To access other viewing areas there are no other curb cuts. However, there are numerous driveways aprons with minimal level changes. If we know in advance we do have a portable ramp we can provide, so please contact us at info@onekrewe.org.
3. Event Amenities & On-Site Support
Seating
We will not have any seating, so we recommend bringing a folding chair if you need to sit.
Restrooms
There are no bathrooms at this location. The closest would be at Bratz Y’All at 617 Piety Street (0.4mi) or The Joint at 701 Mazant Street (0.5mi).
ASL Interpretation & Audio Description
There will be an ASL interpreter and a moderator visually describing the parade at this event.
4. Accessible Parking
We are still working on getting some accessible spots close to Accessibility Row, but have not been able to secure any yet. We have a waitlist for those spots if they become available, only for people viewing the parade from Accessibility Row, so if you are interested please send an email to info@onekrewe.org.
There is also street parking along the parade route and on nearby streets. The closest parking lot is toward the end of the parade route, off of Chartres Street between Gallier and Piety Streets.
5. Accessible Route Finders
For accessibility information on getting around New Orleans, we recommend utilizing the RTA Map for bus and streetcar routes and the Roll Mobility app.
6. Sensory Bags and Portable Sensory Tent
Our sensory bags are provided free of charge to borrow to support guests with sensory sensitivities, including individuals with autism, PTSD, ADHD, or anxiety. They can be checked out near the One Krewe tent. A photo ID or other form of collateral (e.g., car keys) is required to borrow a sensory bag. There is also a portable sensory tent located near Bywater Bakery.
7. Service Animals
As per the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), all service animals are welcome. However, no other animals are permitted in Accessibility Row for the safety of event attendees, including non-ADA service animals.
8. Mobility Scooter / Wheelchair Rental
We will not have any mobility devices available to rent at our event, so we recommend you contact mobility companies directly for rentals.
